Itinerary

In the foothills of the Pyrenees, overlooking the coastal plain of Roussillon, the Domaine de la Perdrix operates 30 hectares of vines in the town of Trouillas, in the heart of the Aspres region, 15 km south of Perpignan.

This family farm created in the 1820s is now run with passion by André and Virginie Gil, this is the new take-off of the Perdrix …

Our terroir is a veritable mosaic of harsh and dry soils.

In order to be able to better manage the identity of this plural land, each plot is vinified separately.

The blends are then made with the aim of obtaining an elegant balance between fruit, fat, tannins, aging potential and the expression of this Mediterranean terroir, of which our wines are intended to echo.

In the heart of nature, at the foot of the Pyrenees

The location of Domaine de la Perdrix, within the Côtes du Roussillon and Rivesaltes terroir, in the Aspres plain, between the Canigou massif and the Pyrenees, makes it a unique location. Benefiting from a dry climate in summer and very mild in winter, the estate, a land of welcome and know-how, offers a variety of wine tourism activities all year round.

From our comfortable cottage, located in the heart of an exceptional wine tourism route, you can visit the surrounding cellars, including that of Byrrh in Thuir, go hiking in the maquis, in the Boulès gorges or on the Catalan coast and visits the picturesque villages of Aspres, monuments such as the Hermitage Saint-Ferréol de Céret, the priory Sainte-Marie de Serrabona, the village and the castle of Castelnou.

The Aspres: the wealth of an arid land

Meaning “arid lands” in Catalan, the Aspres are located between the Roussillon plain to the east and the Canigou massif to the west. The soils are poor and the climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The low water availability of soils due to their lack of nutrients pushes the vines to draw in depth the water and nutrients necessary for its growth. The yields are therefore low, but the vine produces high quality concentrated grapes.

The strong diurnal heat is softened by the tramontane (cool wind coming from the Pyrenees) allowing an irreproachable sanitary state of the grapes and a slower maturation of the berries, preserving freshness and aromatic complexity, necessary for the elaboration of great wines, reflections of wealth from this Aspres terroir.

Make way for nature

At the heart of raw and preserved biodiversity, our plots are naturally surrounded by forest and scrubland where olive trees, cork oaks and almond trees rub shoulders. Preserving this fragile balance is essential. Beyond the soil and the climate, it is the local flora and fauna that contribute to the notion of terroir. We are convinced that only healthy, natural grapes can express the full potential of our terroir. We therefore limit treatments as much as possible and prefer gentler, more respectful cultivation methods: reasoned plowing, organic amendments, leaf stripping and green harvesting allow us to reduce treatments. Everything is in place to let nature express itself through our grapes and our wines. Our commitment materialized in 2018 when we started our conversion to organic.
